outside, beautiful bay bridge. look at that. underneath as well. already an active tuesday morning, november 20th. this is "today in the bay." >> that was a rare sight, right? a vessel going right under the bridge at 5:00 a.m. good morning, everybody. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. the rain already starting to fall in the north bay, working its way south. we want to check in with meteorologist christina loren tracking the latest storm for us. >> yeah, hey, good morning, jon and laura. good morning to you at home. we've got some showers on the radar 101 between santa rosa and san rafael. give yourself extra time there. however, high pressure is still in control of the forecast for most of the bay area. you can see the general nature of your showers. they're listing to the northwest and most of the bay area is remaining dry as we're still under the influence of a pretty good-looking ridge of high pressure, but it will be broken

down later on today as we've got more rain on the way. a pretty significant cold front tracking toward the bay area, so grab the umbrella and the jacket if you're headed out. if not, i'll time these showers out to your doorstep coming up. right now back to you and the rest of the top stories of the day. happening right now, secretary of state hillary clinton is in the process of going over to the middle east. her diplomatic assignment there, try and stop the rocket launches between israel and hamas. marla tellez is in the newsroom with the very latest from that region. good morning, marla. >> reporter: jon, good morning. it's being called an emergency mission. overnight the white house announcing secretary of state hillary clinton is off to israel as the rocket fire shows no sign of letting up between the israelis and hamas. six days into this deadly operation and the new numbers show about 115 palestinians have been killed. almost half of those civilians and nearly 850 people have been hurt. with more than 1,000 rockets fired from each side, israel's prime minister, benjamin

netanyahu saying today a broader military option is a very real option. -- operation, rather. tanks and ground troops still occupy the gaza border ready to go in at a moment's notice. negotiations are under way with egypt as mediator and now secretary clinton there to share her expertise. >> we are encouraged by the cooperation and the consultation we've had with the egyptian leadership. we want to see that, again, support a process that can de-escalate the situation. >> reporter: also new overnight, an israeli man is in custody after attacking a security guard with a knife and an ax. this happened at the u.s. embassy in tel aviv. the guard is okay, though he was stabbed in the leg. at this point officials aren't sure if this attack was related to the ongoing violence there. getting back to hillary clinton, she is expected to meet with prime minister netanyahu and palestinian president moabbas.

a south bay pastor has stepped down after allegedly allowing a registered sex offender to volunteer at his school. the reverend has resigned. he reportedly defended 51-year-old mark gurries when parents got upset the registered sex offender was volunteering at a school event. he was convicted in 2010. he had a note giving him permission to be there. a san jose man hoping to stop his deportation is getting some help from supporters this morning. a small crowd gathering outside the citizen and immigration office in san francisco last night. they would like officials to take a second look at 26-year-old jesus ruiz' case. his parents moved him to san jose illegally when he was a child. immigration issued a deportation

order when he was 11. a decade later, officers deported him. ruiz has since returned illegally and has applied for president obama's deferred action program. >> he was working, you know, he graduated from high school. he is a good person, you know. he was just taking care of his brother, renee, and he was with us. he was just a good person. >> police arrested ruiz back in september for the immigration violation. his attorney is now asking lawmakers to also review his case. port of oakland workers on strike this morning have moved their picket lines from the oakland international airport to the port itself. workers say they're tired of managers spending a ridiculous amount of money on extras for themselves but when it comes to employee benefits, they cry poor. christie smith is live where the timing of the strike no coincidence. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. right now workers are gartither at after off-site location and then within the next hour

they're coming here to the port of oakland. we are seeing work go on as usual right now. the cranes are moving this morning. members of seiu local 1020 started a picket line at the oakland airport yesterday. they'll expand it here today. that happening during the busy thanksgiving travel week. this involves electricians, plumbers and others. the workers are saying that they want the port to come back to the table to negotiate a contract. they have been without one for 17 months. they say the port hasn't been up front about its finances, that some of the leaders here are spending when they are being asked not to spend or ask for money. the port denies that saying that it is having its financial challenges. still, union officials say that they can shut down the shipping operations this morning. they plan to have workers at the gate within the next hour. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." it is 5:06 right now. meteorologist christina loren, correct me if i'm wrong, i believe you were quoting some

singer, carpenter, miss carpenter earlier. >> i'm a big fan. not a fan of cleaning the carpet by any means, let's not confuse the two. i was saying it's only just beg begun. the showers have started in the north bay. we're not going to see those showers south of the golden gate bridge until later on this evening into tonight. as you know, the sun sets at about 4:58 this time of year, so 5:00 p.m. it's dark out there. as we head throughout the day today, we'll see spotty showers. grab your umbrella from santa rosa down to san francisco. look at this, we've got a pretty good-looking front draped across the northernmost portion of the state and that extends all the way to the pacific northwest. let's time out the bulk of the moisture for you. we stop the clock at 5:00 p.m. you see that yellow coming in. that's the heavier rain bands. we're expecting the front to dive to the south impacting us mostly between 5:00 p.m. this evening into 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. then the whole system clears out

of here just in time for your holiday travels. however, watch out for some lingering impact. we'll see some gusty winds today. that means debris on the roadway. also slick conditions will continue. we'll talk more about that coming up. another system on the way as we get into the second half of your weekend. let's check your drive with mike. palo alto 101 just north of university, taillights are heading up toward willow avenue. a smooth drive right here. there is a construction zone in the area but we don't see any major slowing and i can't even find the blinking lights. prepare for that just south of university. the map will show you the area we're talking about. here just south of the dumbarton bridge. and the dumbarton bridge itself heading over the water to the upper right there, they also have the crew in the eastbound direction. farther north there's orange cones in lanes getting cleared from peninsula avenue and north heading up toward the airport. no slowing shows up but i'll let you know if they have to run a traffic break. sounds like not a problem right now. across the bay, the oakland area

heading up the nimitz freeway, a smooth drive and light volume through downtown. coming down from the north heading toward the bay bridge, west 80 with these headlights, just a little increase to the volume coming through the area underneath university avenue and you're at the limit from the carquinez bridge. 19 minutes to the bay bridge toll plaza. back to you. it is 5:08. coming up, the fbi says it's broken up a terror plot in southern california targeting americans. we'll have the latest details coming up in a live report.

this just in to our newsroom, water crews busy after two water main breaks. one in pittsburg causing a five-foot sinkhole on west 11th street near york street. crews have shut off water to the neighborhood while they repair that water main and they try and

fill in that hole. meantime in redwood city, a water main break buckling the intersection of brewster avenue and warren street near el camino real. waters from the eight-inch line flooded two garages, but so far no other damage has been reported. we will of course keep you updated on that one. turning now to the war in israel, youtube pulling and then replacing a controversial video showing the death of a hamas military leader. scott mcgrew, you say silicon valley companies would struggle with this. >> that's right. youtube has been pretty clear in the past. you're not supposed to upload video of people dying. does that include gun camera video taken from an airplane destroying a car carrying the man the u.s. says belongs to a terrorist organization? several bloggers noticed this video uploaded by the israeli defense forces on its strike was pulled and later replaced. no comment from youtube this morning. both hamas and israel have been making use of youtube, twitter,

tumbler, so far not pinterest. a rare rally for wall street monday. some weird reports coming out of hp. let's start started with seem oo mody live at cnbc world headquarters. >> reporter: that's right, good morning. futures are lower after stocks rallied on monday. the dow had its best point gain in more than two months on investor optimism that the white house and congress may reach a budget deal to avoid the year-end fiscal cliff. we get data on housing starts, building permits and earning from hewlett-packard. fed chairman ben bernanke speaks in new york around noon so we'll watch for that. the dow jumping 207 points and the nasdaq rising nearly 63 points to close at 2916. that's where we're at right now for the markets. back to you. >> thank you very much. she mentioned hewlett-packard reporting its profits a few minutes ago. hp recently bought a company called autonomy.

it said accounting and proprieties will cost hp nearly $9 billion extra. we are going over these numbers as quickly as we can. these are huge. we will get back to you on it. on a lighter note, some snickering over something oprah winfrey said. she said she loves the new microsoft tablet. loves it so much, she said, she's going to feature it on her big my favorite things extravaganza on her cable channel. she tweets gotta love that surface. have already baut 12 already for christmas, #favoritethings. she tweeted it on a surface, right? ipad. a lot of bloggers are saying, hey, wait. >> this from my ipad. >> she has lots of toys, i would imagine. >> i'm sure she does. probably an assistant did it from an ipad. >> one for you and one for you. >> we've got to get on that list, you know what i'm saying? get hooked up. >> you know her. >> she's a fan of you. >> i'm a fan of oprah's, let's

just put it that way. >> tlhere's a big back story. >> this guy has connections to beyonce and everybody you can imagine. google him, jon kelley. but wait on that. wait until mike does traffic. let's get to your weather forecast, i'm just kidding right now. temperatures are chilly out there. we are also seeing the winds back up so there's a bit of a windchill factor. grab the coat and hold on to your steering wheel this morning. wind at 11 miles an hour in oakland, at 8 in novato and santa rosa at 9 so certainly getting some stronger gusts. our front is what's causing all that wind. it has not yet arrived and doesn't even move through the bay area until later on tonight, but ahead of that front we get what we call prefrontal precipitation. high pressure still in control in the greater bay area. here's how it all works out. timing of the system, north bay showers all the way through mid-morning then the rain will

spread to the south. the heaviest time frame is 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. showers will subside just in time for you to head out that door and get a leg up on your travel plans. 68 in livermore, 65 for fremont and sdmec67 in redwood city. the next couple days temperatures cover in the 60s but there is a 70 on saturday. we'll get another round of showers sunday into monday, same deal, just the tail end of a system sneaking through the north bay and temperatures will stay comfortable. please stay put. i would never, ever, ever want you to miss mike inouye's traffic report because it might make you late. >> are you sure? that's good. looking over to the south bay where traffic is moving smoothie as you might expect. i expect a pretty strong commute today but everybody has to get that last day in before some folks skedaddle out of town starting tomorrow and next tuesday will be heavy, folks

back from vacation. the accident has cleared heading past greenville so no more slowing eastbound. it is westbound now that is slow which has started coming into livermore, through the construction zone on the eastbound side again. and no problems, but this is the route where we see the build and down into sunol where the crews still there just past highway 84. i still see a little slowing coming eastbound out of castro valley toward the dublin interchange but no accidents. speeds just around 60, i checked the meters, so that shouldn't be a big deal for folks heading through the area. looking over to palo alto and a smooth drive across the dumbarton bridge. a live look shows you the san mateo bridge coming over as well. here's the high rise, a nice easy drive with these westbound commuters coming over toward 101 and no slowing here. a smooth drive, although you might get caught with a gust or two on the high rise. chp has sent on the cantilever side of the bay bridge there's some gusty winds there as well. if you watch this camera long enough, the camera does shake from time to time.

and yes, that's what i do, i watch the road and cameras shake. i also noticed this. the sheen on the roadway. as christina is talking about san rafael up into santa rosa, the mist and drizzle already kicking in. a nice easy drive right now. this will not build until closer to the 7:00 hour, guys. back to you. it's 5:17. are you one of the millions expected to fly this holiday weekend? sfo already bracing for 3% spike in travelers this thanksgiving compared to last year. with so many traveling, investigative reporter elise kirschner examines what happens when medical emergencies happen at 30,000 feet and how often the public finds out about these in-flight events. >> reporter: we found that airlines aren't tracking that information internally but there is no central database to find out how often passengers need in-flight medical help. that's because the industry doesn't have to report it and there is growing criticism that the current policy could come at a cost to travelers.

>> this could be a potentially life-threatening situation. >> reporter: when there are medical problems in the skies, 90% of commercial airlines in the u.s. will call med air. >> typically the captain or flight attendant will contact us through satellite phone or even through the aircraft radio. >> reporter: the private company based in tempe, arizona, gives advice to pilots, flight attendants or any medical professional who may be on board. >> medical events are actually rare. we can't estimate. one medical event for every 30,000 -- 3,000 passengers carried. >> how often do in-flight medical events occur on airlines? >> that's a very good question and no one really knows. >> reporter: the faa does not require airlines to report in-flight medical events, even when a passenger dies. >> they're in a contained environment, so knowing what the most common illnesses and injuries and events that occur can really help better prepare

as we close in on thanksgiving day just a couple away, we have a live look at san jose. the sharks, well, their building right there, the games still off for the foreseeable future. that lockout continues to drag on. there will be talks again today in new york city. however, yesterday's talks lasting just an hour and a half with very little to show for it. games right now cancelled through the end of the month. more cancellations could be coming soon unless there is some quick movement. time now for a little celebration, the oar side of the extreme. the orange carpet being rolled out in san francisco tonight for the world premiere of the world series film. >> at the wall. another for pablo sandoval. >> ah yes, a world series champion, giants in the film telling the story of how the giants won that world series.

activity. if you will be traveling, if you are one of the lucky ones headed to tahoe, keep in mind there is a winter weather advisory in place all wait till tomorrow. snow level down to 5,000 feet expecting 6 to 10 fresh inches of powder. that means bring your chains, right, mike? >> you've got to get there before you can enjoy the powder. bring those chains because of those changing conditions and be prepared to adapt to whatever you need to for those delays. looking over here, 880 a smooth drive. no delay through the area but there's a greater number of cars. north of here there's some construction i've cancelled on the bottom of your screen but no slowing because traffic is relatively light through the area. also some construction on the upper deck but speeds are fine once you pass the s curve. we're looking at 98th avenue, the on-ramp a disabled big rig still there but only blocks the slow lane. and 880 through the area moves smoothly as well all the way up to 580 as well for the castro valley area. no more slowing in the dublin

interchange. a smooth drive now and the arrow points to the area where we had some earlier slowing. back to you. >> thank you very much. a myth buster is hoping to bust a burglar to stole a bag from his car. adam savage, co-host of the popular discovery channel series tweeted out this picture of the bag made famous by artist tom sack. savage said someone broke into his car saturday night. there was nothing valuable in the bag but the bag itself has sentimental value. >> it's like a glamor shot for the bag. >> savage is offering a reward for the bag's safe return. it's beginning to look a lot like christmas in new york city. swarovski's jewelers has unveiled its 2012 star. crews are busy covering this 20,000-pound tree with more than 45,000 l.e.d. lights stretching some five miles long.

it's just violence beyond imagination. >> new this morning, his son caught in the middle of a deadly crime spree. for the first time a father shares his pain as police search for his son's killer. and we're just getting some light showers in the north bay for now, but heavier rain on the way. we'll time this system out, let you know who's going to get hit the hardest coming up. because of that we have some wet roads and a wind advisory.

we'll tell you what's going on as far as your morning commute coming up. and we have some new details on a plan to expand light rain service in the south bay. and a live look outside, speaking of the south bay this morning, waiting for the sun's arrival on this tuesday, november 20th. this is "today in the bay." 5:29 right now. good morning, everybody. just two days away from thanksgiving. i'm jon kelley. >> i can taste the stuffing already. i'm laura garcia-cannon. rain is actually expected to hit the bay area today. meteorologist christina loren is tracking that storm for us. how are we looking? >> we're looking pretty good. good morning to you at home. most of the shower activity right now is still located the northernmost portion of the state extending into the pacific northwest. so for us if you had to travel, you wanted to get a leg up this morning, it's a great time to do so because showers are still for the most part north of the golden gate bridge and that's where they'll remain until about noon today.

then that front starts to slide to the south. but right now as you can see i want to show you san francisco is still nice and dry. it's just marin county. showers getting cut off by a ridge of high pressure. as we head throughout the day that ridge breaks down. we stop the clock on your futurecast at 5:00 p.m. that's when the bulk of the moisture starts to push into the north bay. that front will continue to slide to the south. by 6:00 a.m. still some lingering shower activity in the south bay so count on a wet commute tomorrow but the whole thing blows out of here early tomorrow and that means great travel conditions will prevail yet again but not until 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. so we'll continue to track our next system for you and let you know what you can expect for the holiday. as jon said, just two days away now. back to you guys. >> thanks, christina. it's 5:30. port of oakland workers on strike this morning have moved their picket lines from the oakland international airport to the port itself. workers say they're tired of some managers spending a ridiculous amount of money on extras for themselves but when it comes to employee benefits,

they cry poor. christie smith joins us at the port of oakland where the timing of the strike is no coincidence, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, thanksgiving week. within the last couple of minutes some workers showed up here at the port of oakland. we're on middle harbor road and they set up this giant rat here. this is where the truckers turn in in the morning, but i'm told that most of the workers who are going on strike are still off site. they should be here within the next ten, 15 minutes. they're coming in a bus together. i spoke with one union rep who said that truckers will be affected today. officially the strike getting under way at 6:00 this morning. right now, though, those truckers lined up ready to go in. the union really saying that their goal is to prevent the port from operating today. last night members of seiu, electricians and other workers, started at the airport during the busy thanksgiving week. today the port, though, is the target. the port authority wants the union to make a 5% contribution

to their retirement. the union says really this is about unfair labor practices. they have been without a contract for 17 months. they also say that the higher-ups are spending freely when they are being asked to cut back so we'll keep an eye on the situation for you but now workers starting to show up. reporting looifg at the port, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> unfortunately that rat and that train getting in the way of things. christie, thank you very much. another strike happening right here in the bay area today, this one involving nurses. for the very first time in years, it involves nurses at south bay hospitals. marla tellez is live in the newsroom with a look at that and other south bay headlines from overnight. >> reporter: good morning. nurses from ten local hospitals will walk off the job at 7:00 this morning. as you mentioned, this includes more than 1,000 in san jose who have not walked the picket line in decades. for 1500 nurses at san jose's good samaritan and regional

medical center, it's going to be a one-day strike. but in the east bay, a two-day strike is planned for eight hospitals there operated by sutter health. although they are owned by different groups, the nurses are fighting for similar issues, including safer staffing levels and patient care conditions. all hospitals have hired replacements. in the los altos hills a warning to students at foothill community college where brazen armed robbery happened yesterday morning on campus. police are working on a sketch of the suspect who school officials say pulled a gun on two men and took off with their back packs. and then big news for light rail in los gatos. santa clara's vta is considering adding an extra one and a half miles to its original corridor project which would connect los gatos to the downtown san jose campbell line. mark your calendars, they will hold a public meeting december 4th at the campbell public library if you'd like to give your thoughts. >> good to know. thank you very much.

it's 5:34. a campbell father is speaking out for the first time this morning over his son's death in a deadly crime spree. rory pettiford said police came to his home to let him mow his son was shot and killed. rory parkpettiford was killed during a carjacking attempt. two suspects robbed four businesses, killed parkpettiford and then fired on officers. >> we just thought where we lived and how we raised him and thatting for like this was even possible. >> police have arrested one of the suspects. his accomplice escaped and is still on the run. investigators are hoping a $20,000 reward and this sketch will help them find that second suspect. a consumer group today sending a warning to parents today about some of this year's most popular toys for christmas. the public interest research

group releasing its annual trouble in toyland safety report later on this morning. this is that move that names toys the organization has found potentially hazardous for kids. as soon as that report is released, we will have it for you on our website, nbcbayarea.com. 5:35. the richmond city council will talk tonight about ongoing repairs to the chevron refinery damaged by fire in august. chevron wants to replace the corroded carbon steel pipe with an alloy called 9 chromium. however, contra costa reports the federal kem sal safety board is saying stainless steel is more resistant to corrosion. it is 5:35 right now. christina loren always working very hard for us early in the morning. she has been tracking this weather. rain on the way for us, right? >> yeah, rain on the way. i'm concerned for people who are trying to get out of town today, although we're not expecting heavy rain until later on tonight. we are expecting flight delays,

especially out of sfo with low ceilings in the forecast as early as this morning, and winds are picking up as well and will continue to as we head throughout the day today so keep that in mind. grab your jacket, grab that umbrella. the system for the most part stays to our north as high pressure is still in control. you can see the showers breaking apart before they hit the golden gate bridge. that will continue to be the trend throughout the day but that ridge will break down as we head throughout the second half of the day. starting to get our first showers here south of the golden gate bridge starting at about noon. we'll see the heaviest activity between 5:00 p.m. tonight and 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. we're talking about the potential for a quarter of an inch to three-quarters of an inch. the north bay will get the most rain as usual. airport delays expected but we should be okay here in san jose when it comes to weather delays. wind 15 to 20 miles per hour sustained gusting at times for 30 miles per hour that. could make for a rough drive. we'll check on that commute in just one moment with mike. here are your highs today. 67 degrees in redwood city.

we'll get to your full forecast. that seven-day is ready to go in my next report. as promised, here's mike. >> good morning, folks. oakland 880, we're seeing a few more lights but not a major concern. things won't kick in for another half hour tru this nimitz corridor. we'll look at the maps and show you we do have construction also on the map at the bottom of your screen. no slowing as a result of these road crews as well as the ones across the bay bridge. you're starting to see a little slowing up the incline. the earlier big rig that was stalled on the 98th avenue on-ramp has completely cleared from the chp incident report and the roadway. 880 moves smoothly in both directions past that scene. a little slowing now coming in out of the altamont pass but a little lighter than typical traffic tuesday. watching for a more compressed commute. likely going to hit hard but not so long. we'll look at another live shot and look at san jose. 101 at the 680/101 interchange,

their birthday suits. public nudity is certainly not new to the castro, it's just that now it seems to be more pronounced, which is now scott weine rechlt, the supervisor who represents that district has w proposed this ban. the third time you could be looking at a misdemeanor charge with a $500 fine and possible jail time. >> those who didn't care that much have gotten fet up with it and it's gay people, straight people, people with kids, people without kids. it's pretty broad-based. >> reporter: now, the ordinance would not ban public nudity during some events like gay pride, bay to breakers, those events you could still be out in the buff. one of the reason the nudists want to express themselves this way, it's basically a freedom of

afghanistan. those four suspects were arrested last friday. coming up in our next half hour, we will have a live report from so southern california with all the information on this latest investigation. plans for a new warriors arena are moving forward. today the pourboard of supervis is expected to sign off on the financial feasibility of that project. the arena is expected to bring 4300 jobs to san francisco, but the warriors promised to give current oracle arena employees first crack at those new jobs. in the meantime the new niners stadium will reportedly also be the home to the kraft fight hunger bowl. santa clara stadium authority is expected to make that announcement later this afternoon. the bowl game is currently played at at&t park. it would move when the new stadium opens in 2014. >> i just recently had a chance to drive by that new stadium. that thing is going up at a very accelerated rate. it looks good already. 5:50 right now. a bay area home is getting a little bit of a makeover. coming up why not everybody is

billion charge on the error. the whole purchase was $11 billion. it is hard to think of anything worse this morning for hewlett-packard. we expected the company to say computer sales were sinking and they said that. we expected printer sales were sinking, and they said that. but that one of silicon valley's biggest and more storied companies would say there are $9 billion worth of errors in a company it bought for $11 billion, we did not see that coming. that is not going to go over well on wall street. shares in pretrading down 11%. this even after new ceo meg whitman warned the planned turn-around would take longer than she expected. a rare rally on the markets monday. the state of california said it made $290 million in last week's auction of carbon credits and then it sold all the credits for next year. that said, for an auction, the price didn't rise very much. this system called cap and trade was created by a proposition
